About From the Desert To Oasis Food Distribution

From the Desert To Oasis Food Distribution program is a volunteer run food distribution serving the Austin area (on the Westside of Chicago). The program contains multiple initiatives, however, the one that impacts the most people in the community is the Feed The West Side (FTW) initiative.  FTW provides food, essential items for new moms, personal care items and PPE to our neighbors in need.

From the Desert to Oasis started due to a few important factors, but the most important was food deserts. The Austin area has been a well known food desert for years. However, with COVID-19 affecting the community, the destitution the West side is facing and Chicago Public School tentatively stopped distributing meals due to civil unrest in the Chicago Area after the tragic death of George Floyd, we knew we had to do something to help uplift the community which birth the Feed the Westside Food Initiative. At this time we noticed that many of the food relief programs were on the South side of Chicago. Yet again leaving residents on the West side in a food desert or food apartheid.

Volunteers

There are many ways to volunteer. Volunteers are needed on Saturday mornings to staff the event set-up, food distribution and during the week of the pop-up event to help with donation collection or pick ups from our retail partners.

All volunteers should sign up via the JWF website. Our scheduling coordinator will contact you to confirm your volunteer assignment.

All volunteers must wear masks and be willing to have temperature checks. Small groups are welcome for transporting food and supplies from storage to distribution site.

The People We Serve

Many community members travel from other areas from the West Side (such as Garfield Park Lawndale, Humboldt Park, West Town...ect ), to receive our services on Saturday afternoon to visit our food distribution site. Our services benefit hundreds of Cook County residents every month - from young families to senior citizens.
